Big Days works with young people across Newcastle, Sunderland, Redcar and Cleveland to provide practical support and companionship to both younger and older people experiencing isolation and loneliness.
It works with young people in their local area to plan and organise events that help to combat these feelings. The project, funded by the Coop, recognises that some days and times of the year are harder than others for people hence the name Big Days.
By working with a range of young people we hope to reduce their own feelings of isolation by doing something positive for other people in their community.
Events organised so far have included an Alternative Valentine’s Day and an Alternative Mother’s Day for a significant woman in a young person’s life. We are now in the process of planning an Alternative Prom for those young people who missed their Year 11 one for whatever reason.
We have links with Alzheimers UK and Age UK to develop local volunteering opportunities for the young people involved in Big Days.
