We recently welcomed local youngster Hannah into the Youth Focus: North East office for a week’s work placement. Here, in her blog post, Hannah shares her busy diary from the week and talks about her insights into the world of youth work…
For work experience I chose to come to Youth Focus: North East because I knew that they managed different types of events and groups. With my interest in events management I thought this would be a great opportunity so I could get a feel for what it’s really like in this type of workspace.
During the week not only have I discovered how much hard work the team at Youth Focus: North East put into their events and groups, but I have also gained some really valuable skills which I will be sure to use in my remaining time in school and also with life in general.
Monday I was in the office getting to know all of the staff, doing small tasks for Alexis (the Communications Officer) and getting a basic feel of what it’s like in a working environment – it’s much better than school!
Tuesday and Wednesday I was at the Ladders programme with Hannah and Neil (both youth workers) which was a great experience. Ladders is a course which is all about pre-employability. There are four modules plus an induction which take place over two days.
On Wednesday I was supposed to be at an event in North Tyneside however, I loved the Ladders programme so much and felt that I got so much from it on the Tuesday that the team let me stay on for the second day and complete the programme.
Thursday I was back in the office helping Louise (the Administration Apprentice) with small jobs that needed to be done and I helped Alexis find venues for the somewhereto_ North East programme. somewhereto_ matches young people with spaces where they can rehearse for theatrical or dance productions, DJ, perform musical productions and so much more!
Finally, on Friday I spent my last day in the office and finished off some more tasks, and reflected on this brilliant week of work.
Work placement highlights
My favourite part of the week was the Ladders programme which I did with Hannah and Neil. Over the course of the two days we worked on skills such as communication, team work and time management as well as learning and understanding the importance of motivation and enthusiasm, professionalism and commitment.
I met some really nice people and loved getting to know them by taking part in icebreaker activities. From the two days, I learned new skills such as time management – which I was terrible at before the programme, but have also expanded on skills I already had such as team work.
I have had an amazing week at Youth Focus: North East and being here has really motivated me to get involved in some of the things they do and I am really determined to get on another work placement, if not here, somewhere very similar as soon as possible.
I would definitely recommend work experience at Youth Focus: North East because you really do get something out of it. I have made some great connections that I will be sure to use in the near future and feel as if I have really made something out of my week. Thank you to all the team who have helped me out this week and made me feel comfortable, and for welcoming me into your workspace. I have had a brilliant time!
