My Mind Matters is a youth-led mental health training course run by Youth Focus: North East.
The training was originally developed by young people, with support from youth and mental health professionals. It was subsequently delivered to over 230 youth work practitioners with a collective reach of over 81,000 young people across the region. What makes this mental health training unique is that the course is delivered by a cohort of Young Trainers.
In 2014, the project received national recognition, being named regional winner in the Team Activity category at the vInspired Awards and making the shortlist in the national awards.
In its current form, the training covers the topics of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, psychosis, suicide, and self-harm. Attendees learn how to recognise the signs and symptoms of these common mental health problems and how to signpost a young person on to appropriate services.
The training now encompasses a range of beneficiaries, including:
- Young people
- Teachers and college staff
