Young Changers Look to Help Region’s Homeless

Young Changers from across Tyne and Wear are planning to do a range of donation drives across the North East. They will be working with schools to arrange donation drives, as well as supermarkets, charities and local businesses to drum up local support.

The young people are also planning an event at the end of March which will be the final day to give donations, with the aim to hand everything they have collected to the necessary places. They are working closely with local food banks and homelessness charities in order to find out how to best distribute our donations.

The group feel this is the right time to do something about it because as a group we have noticed a significant rise in rough sleeping, up 18%, compared to 15/16, however none of these stats cover the 62% of single homeless people who are hidden and don’t show up in official figures. This obviously shows that there is a massive need for work like this. Between April 2015 – March 2016 there were 4,046 homeless applications in the North East, of which 66.78% were rejected.

There is never a good time to be homeless, but with the weather as cold as it is now and the numbers of homeless people rising there is a pressing need for donations. If you would like to support the group and their cause, you can leave donations of toiletries, socks/hats/gloves and dry foods at our office in Gateshead.
